Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator / Utility Machine Operator works on various construction sites to operate a wide range of power construction equipment, including excavators, motor graders, skid loaders, dozers, scrapers, tractors, front-end loaders, and utility-specific equipment. This role supports site development, underground utility installation, and roadway construction by excavating, grading, trenching, and moving materials. The operator may also perform routine maintenance, assist with utility installation, and support crews in completing project tasks safely and efficiently.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate heavy and utility equipment of various sizes and weights used in site, highway, and underground utility construction
- Perform trenching, backfilling, grading, and material handling in support of water, sewer, and storm utility installation
- Safely operate equipment around existing underground and overhead utilities, ensuring proper clearances and compliance with locate markings
- Assist with exposing, locating, and protecting existing utilities (hand digging, potholing, daylighting as needed)
- Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, utility drawings, and trenching requirements
- Properly follow company safety policies and OSHA regulations; report concerns to the Foreman, Superintendent, General Superintendent, or Safety Director
- Follow daily procedures and protocols established through job orientations and training
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment; report defects or repair needs promptly
- Coordinate with crew members, laborers, and pipe layers to support efficient installation of underground utilities
- Ensure trench safety requirements are met, including sloping, benching, or use of trench protection systems
- Maintain awareness of jobsite conditions and communicate any issues that may impact safety, productivity, or project timelines
- Keep supervisors informed of conditions or actions that may affect successful project execution or company operations
- Assist with general labor duties as needed to support the crew and project completion
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned by management
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy construction equipment; utility installation experience preferred
- Working knowledge of underground utility construction practices, including water, sewer, and storm systems
- Understanding of trenching, shoring, and excavation safety requirements
- Ability to operate equipment in tight or confined areas and around active utility lines
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and grade stakes
- Strong understanding of heavy equipment operating principles and maintenance practices
- Ability to communicate effectively with management, coworkers, general contractors, and subcontractors
- Ability to understand, follow, and relay written and verbal instructions
- Strong interpersonal skills with a team-oriented mindset
- Reliable, punctual, and safety-focused
Other Requirements
- Must be able to work 8–10 hour workdays, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends
- Flexibility for extended hours and possible out-of-town work as needed
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Union affiliation or willingness to take necessary steps to join the union
